If you have been in an accident, an injury lawyer can represent you in negotiations with the insurance company and in court. Finding the right attorney is important as it can make a difference in how much compensation you receive and whether or not you are treated fairly. We are experts and will work with you to ensure that your rights are protected.
Going to court can be daunting and intimidating for people that don't practice law. We understand that much of the intimidation comes from not understanding the process and what to expect. We will handle everything in the courtroom, but there are things you can do to prepare for court that will help to make your case stronger and help to relieve some of your anxieties.
As an injury lawyer, here is what we recommend you do to prepare.
Start immediately after the accident.
Whether you were hurt in a car wreck, had a slip and fall accident or was hurt while shopping – what you do immediately after the accident can impact your case either positively or negatively. We recommend that after you are sure that nothing was broken, you look around to see if there were any witnesses and ask for their contact information. Next, take pictures of the area with your cell phone along with any damages. Try to take enough pictures that the story can be told visually at a later date. Next, you need to report the accident to the police or the manager of the store. Fill out an accident report so that there is a record of the events and who was involved. When you get home, or before you leave, take notes of what happened and recount every possible detail so that you can be prepared to tell the story in detail at a later date.
Go to the doctor on a regular basis.
Your doctor is an important partner in your health care and recovery. Every time you visit them, you take steps towards getting better and at the same time they are helping to build your case. When they take detailed notes about your condition, that information can be used at a later date to help us demonstrate the extent of your injuries and how they will impact you now and into the future. Many people make the mistake of going to the doctor a few times then suffering from ongoing pain at home. This is unwise because the other attorney will use this to try and show that you weren't actually hurt. Stay consistent with your health care.
Practice what you will say.
It can help to ease your nerves if you practice your testimony. Practice telling the story of what happened and use your initial notes to refresh your memory if needed then answer any questions you think they may ask. This will help you to feel more relaxed when questioned in person.
